Our guide for the two weeks I was in Africa was Martin Meyer, who was outstanding in every way. For one thing, he was endlessly helpful and patient, quite un-flappable in fact.

Martin shared his personal experiences with us, individually and as a group, which added so much dimension to what we were already learning -- about apartheid, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and the history of South Africa. His own experiences deepened our own insights and empathy.

Of course he is also incredibly knowledgeable about animal behaviour, topography, geology and the history of Africa.

He seemed to know everything about all of the various birds.
He could respond to just about every question that might be asked ... and seemed to delight in sharing his information, but never in any way that could even come close to a know it all way.

There are many words to use for Martin -- humble, amazingly knowledgeable, a wonderful raconteur, always enthusiastic.
But in addition to these truly admirable and inspiring qualities, he was very fun and funny -- quick in catching on and
so funny in his story telling.

I can still picture him chuckling with his whole body -- not only quick to amuse but quick to be amused as well. On top of everything else --most importantly, being a strong ballast no matter what  -- he surprised me by being so fun -- and not only having a great sense of humour himself, but really enjoying the sense of humour of others.

Being on a tour with strangers and keeping a pretty demanding schedule -- up at 6, on the drive at 6:30 etc. -- and being with people most of the whole time can be exhausting and wearing.

It takes a very special person to weave the fabric of people's quirky personalities with the demands of the trip itself. I truly can't imagine anyone who could be more capable at this than Martin.
He made the trip nothing but a joy and a wonder.
